Fall 2007 sabbatical

Most recently, I was on sabbatical from High Mowing School for the fall semester. It gave me a chance to explore a variety of new ideas in depth and to develop a large installation that I’m excited about. It’s cut paper “banners,” related to Mexican papel picados, hung like Tibetan prayer flags across walls and corners. They are made from brown paper bags that have been drawn on with white Prismacolor and black ink, then intricately cut out with scissors. It’s a sort of meditation on the many ways of seeing, tentatively titled “Visionary.”

I’ve also had the chance to delve into some writing projects and to catch up on a lot of great reading.

Two-person show with sculptor Roger Prince

In June 2007, I had a two-person show with my father, the sculptor Roger Prince, at the June Fitzpatrick Gallery in Portland, Maine, where he lives.

We’d never shown together before, and it was an honor for me to have this wonderful opportunity to both see my work and have it be seen in the context of his. He continues to be a big influence on my thinking as an artist — both in his provocative and generous critiques and in the inspiring example of his own impressive and ever-expanding body of work and new ideas. Many thanks to June Fitzpatrick for dreaming up the idea for the show, installing it so beautifully, and making it a happy success.
